Watch the Renko Video
This video is part of The Stop Hunter’s Renko trading education library. It explains the concept visually and shows how the idea can be applied to real chart structure rather than treated as a purely theoretical rule.
Why this matters for futures traders
Futures markets combine leverage, speed and changing volatility. Renko can help simplify the chart, but every setup still needs market-specific rules, realistic execution assumptions and controlled risk.
Why Block Size Changes Everything
A smaller block size produces more bricks, more trades and more sensitivity to short-term movement. A larger block size removes more noise but can delay entries and exits. The choice directly affects signal frequency, stop placement and the type of move the strategy captures.
Why Futures Need Market-Specific Settings
ES, NQ, crude oil, gold and currency futures have different price scales, volatility patterns and session behaviour. A Renko setting that is sensible for one contract may be completely unsuitable for another.
Use Volatility as a Starting Point
ATR and average session movement can provide a rational starting point. The final setting still needs testing, but linking block size to actual market movement is stronger than choosing a convenient round number.
Key Lessons to Take From the Video
Define whether the strategy is scalping, intraday or swing based.
Measure typical volatility during the session you trade.
Test a range of neighbouring block sizes.
Prefer stable performance across a region rather than one isolated best result.
The chart is only one part of the edge
Brick size is part of the strategy itself. It changes what the chart sees. I do not treat it as a cosmetic setting, and I do not keep changing it until the backtest looks good.
